Author of Geoffrey Beene: The Anatomy of his Work

“Nothingness is everything,” declares fashion's resident alien, the happy heretic Geoffrey Beene. While people on the Manhattan street below race for cabs and buses in the pouring rain, he bunches some precious bit of lace into a ball, then cajoles it onto the arms of a mannequin. The gesture is so familiar it should have a patent pending. Nevertheless, what a moment ago you assumed was nothing more than a fragment of fabric, a handkerchief, suddenly becomes a bolero. “You see, it's barely there,” whispers Beene, “Beauty and the least.”
